You know guests are coming. You also know what’s behind your guest-room door: packages waiting to be returned, things you meant to put away and maybe even a few things you forgot were there at all. If preparing your guest room ready for the holidays feels bigger than it should, you’re not alone. As a professional organizer working with Austin-area families, I see spare rooms become the landing place for everything that doesn’t have a home.
Clearing the clutter is easy to postpone until holiday guests put a deadline on the project. The good news, though, is that we’re not talking about doing an Instagram-worthy makeover of your guest room. (Who needs that much pressure during the holiday season?) The goal is a lot simpler: Give your guests space to settle in, add a few thoughtful comforts and let yourself enjoy their visit.
Why Your Guest Room Becomes a Catch-All
When stuff doesn’t have a clear place to go, your spare room can feel like a convenient answer. We’re all busy and dealing with lots of decisions each day. So it makes sense that sometimes we just want things out of sight and out of mind. The problem is that they don’t stay out of mind. Over time, small decisions add up, and you have a guest room filled with unfinished projects, donations you meant to drop off and other household odds and ends. By the time you need to prepare the guest room for the holidays, clearing it can feel like a much larger job than you expected.
The temptation is to move everything into another room and close that door instead. I understand why. But then all that clutter is still waiting for you to tackle it. Facing it now gives you some extra serenity during the rest of the holiday season. And that’s a gift all of us can use.
Start by Clearing Space, Not Decorating
A welcoming guest room doesn’t need to look like a hotel. But it does need space for your guests’ suitcases, a spot to set down a phone or glass of water and somewhere to put their clothes.
That’s why I always start guest-room projects by dealing with what’s already in the room before adding anything else to it. Touches like a wreath on the door are lovely, but they won’t make the room feel restful if the closet is jam-packed and every surface is holding something else.
I know it can feel overwhelming to face a jumbled-up space you need to organize. That’s why my team and I sort and categorize what’s in the guest room so our client can make decisions one category at a time, rather than dealing with everything at once. Donations can move out, other items go back where they actually belong and we can reset the room for its intended use. It’s a calmer way to make progress, without judgment about how the guest room got cluttered in the first place.
A Guest Room Reset in North Austin
We recently helped a North Austin client whose family member was coming to stay. Her guest room had become the place for everything that didn’t have a home, and she needed it cleared before the visit.
Our team decluttered and reset the room in under five hours. That left our client a few days to add any final welcoming details she wanted, rather than spending those days wondering how she would get the room ready.
That’s the difference I want for you, too. Adding the thoughtful touches is more enjoyable when decluttering is no longer hanging over you.
A Welcoming Guest Room: What Matters Most
Once the room has space to breathe, keep the rest straightforward. Guests are usually looking for comfort and a little privacy, not elaborate holiday decor.
Make the room clean and easy to use
As you prepare your guest room for the holidays, fresh bedding, a clean floor and wiped-down surfaces go a long way. Check that your guest can reach an outlet, use a lamp from the bed and find somewhere unobtrusive to put their luggage. If there’s a closet or dresser, leave some space available rather than assuming they’ll live out of a suitcase.
If you have cleaners coming, it helps to have the room decluttered before their visit. That way, they can clean the space instead of working around piles.
And if time is short, focus on what your guests will actually use. A comfortable bed and clear surfaces matter more than scrubbing a baseboard no one will notice.
Put the essentials where guests can find them
Think about the little questions guests might hesitate to ask: Where are the extra towels? What’s the Wi-Fi password? Is there another blanket?
You can answer many of them before they come up. Leave out towels, make an extra blanket easy to find and put the Wi-Fi information somewhere easy-to-spot. If your guests will be using a separate bathroom, make sure they know where to find toilet paper and any toiletries you’ve set aside.
This isn’t about stocking a miniature store in the guest room. It’s about helping someone feel comfortable in a space that isn’t their own.
Add one or two personal touches
A handwritten welcome note, a bottle of water by the bed or a favorite snack can make a guest feel especially welcome. When it comes to holiday decor, a small arrangement or simple detail is plenty.
If you love putting together elaborate welcome baskets or adding holiday touches to your guest room’s decor, don’t let me stop you. These things can be lovely additions. But you don’t need all of them. Choose what suits your guests and your schedule. Relaxing time with you matters more to them than whether you can pull off an elaborate holiday “performance.”
Give Yourself Permission to Delegate
Holiday hosting takes time and energy. You might have outings to plan, treats to make or shopping to do. So it makes sense if clearing and resetting a guest room isn’t how you want to use the days before your guests arrive.
Please know that you don’t need to prove you can do it all yourself. My team can handle the sorting, decluttering and organizing so the room is ready for your personal touches. We create solution-based systems that are easy to maintain. That helps keep your guest room from again becoming the default holding area again as soon as the holidays are over. (Which means your guest-room reset will be a whole lot easier the next time visitors are on their way.)
A Guest Room That Lets Everyone Settle In
For your guests, a great holiday visit doesn’t hinge on a perfectly decorated guest room. It’s more about the feeling of walking into a room with space for their things, what they need close at hand and the sense that someone thought about their comfort. For you, imagine how much more you’ll enjoy your visitors without the last-minute scramble of preparing the guest room for them.
If you’d like to take the guest room off your plate before holiday visitors arrive, we’d love to help. Keep in mind that our schedule fills up early this time of year, so don’t wait to book your Connection Call.
