You’re finally on your dream vacation when the realization hits:
It’s midnight, the hotel is noisy, and you don’t have earplugs.
Your kids forgot the chargers they need for their different devices.
Those event tickets aren’t in the email folder you thought they were.
When headaches like those pile up, that trip to get away from it all can start to feel just as stressful as everyday life. The solution isn’t second-guessing yourself all the way to the airport or the whole first leg of your road trip. It’s building a solution-based system that gives you peace of mind, for this vacation and all your future travels. Just a bit of extra planning for your next trip is a time investment that will pay off many times over.
Vtopmart 4 Pack Stackable Storage Drawers
A Toiletry Drawer You Can Shop
If I had to give you only one strategy for making packing easier, it would be setting up dedicated toiletry drawers. For our clients, we use long, narrow drawer organizers. A good size is about 12-by-7½ inches, with a divider down the middle. The organizers can live under your sink or in a linen closet.
Each drawer can hold a couple of categories. For example, hair products on one side of the divider, body care on the other. I also like having a drawer dedicated to easy-to-forget items like razors, shaving cream, earplugs and sleep masks.
With this system, packing feels less like rummaging through your medicine cabinet and more like shopping your own serene little travel shop. You don’t have to worry about forgetting specific items. You just have to go to your toiletry drawers, where your visible, organized inventory does the remembering for you.
Wrap-It Super-Stretch Silicone Bands
A Tech Kit That Lives in Your Bag
Electronics can be another source of travel stress. All those cables get tangled up with the rest of your stuff. You can’t tell which charging block goes with which device. And somehow the cord you really need is always the one missing.
A clear travel pouch to corral all your tech gear makes life a lot easier. Again, it’s all about getting things in one place and visible. The trick is to designate your tech pouch for travel only. Resist the temptation to borrow from the kit when you’re home. If something gets lost from your travel kit, replace it promptly. This system only works if it’s complete every time you reach for it.
Besides the clear pouch, silicone bands (the kind that look like hair ties) are my other essential for organizing tech accessories for travel. Wrap each cable in a band and you’ll never find yourself trying to untangle cords when everyone is ready to leave for the theme park or shore excursion.
Packing Lists You’ll Actually Reuse
I get it: Your life already has a lot of to-do lists. Creating a master packing list might not sound like much fun, but it’s one of the cheapest, most effective ways to have a better vacation.
Your packing list should cover not just what goes in your suitcase but also what to stow in your purse or other personal item. Here are my essentials:
- High-protein snacks
- Refillable water bottles for each person
- A battery pack, charged before you leave
- A few small remedies for digestive troubles
If you regularly take different kinds of trips, I’d even suggest having a dedicated master packing list for each one.
Kids who are old enough can manage their own lists. For example, “Five pairs of shorts, five shirts, two swimsuits.” This responsibility is good for them and for you. Lists are also especially helpful for anyone with ADHD or anyone who tends to procrastinate. They take the burden off working memory (and others on the trip). You don’t have to hold a bunch of details in your head. Instead, you just work through what’s written down.
Tools That Earn Their Space
Organized packing means less stress when you unpack, and more time to enjoy your destination. Packing cubes are one of my favorite tools. Pack by category (T-shirts together, pajamas together, etc.) or by outfit, depending on how your brain works.
Especially if you’re traveling with carry-ons only, vacuum-style space-saver bags are worth considering. Look for ones that come with a small hand pump, so you can recompress clothes when you pack up to head home.
And if you travel with a lot of swimsuits (I’ve had clients with 20+), invest in some individual swimsuit bags. You can see each suit through the bag, they stay separate, and they go straight into the suitcase without any rearranging.
Set Up Your Phone Before You Go
For a smooth trip, an organized phone can be just as important as an organized suitcase. These steps don’t take long, but in stressful situations, you’ll be glad you completed them.
Keep tickets and boarding passes in one place. For me, that’s the Wallet app on my iPhone. I never want to be searching through my inbox at the gate.
All those hotel, restaurant and attraction recommendations friends and family have given you need a single home, too. I use my Notes app and voice-type new recommendations when they’re fresh in my mind. If you’re a frequent traveler, you may want to pin this list at the top of your app or even create a shortcut to it from your home screen.
While you’re creating this note, set up another one for emergency info or anything else you might need to access quickly. Don’t worry about being exhaustive. Just a few key pieces of info can make all the difference: What’s the address of your hotel or vacation rental? Where’s the nearest ER? Where’s the nearest pharmacy if you need Dramamine or aloe vera?
Ditoi Disposable Bath Towels
Don’t Forget the Trip Home
The last piece of your system is also the easiest one to overlook: how to get everything home again.
If there’s any chance you’ll come back with wet swimsuits, sandy towels or beach gear, pack a couple of waterproof bags. Wet things go straight in, and straight to the wash when you get home. (Quick aside: Disposable quick-dry towels are so handy for beach trips. You can also use them year-round at the gym, as my husband does.)
And if you already have your eye on souvenirs, take an extra carry-on, packed flat inside your suitcase.
Once you’re home, put everything back where it lives. Refill the toiletries that ran low. Recharge the battery pack and tuck it back in your tech pouch. Remember: A solution-based system stays a system only if you reset it. The few minutes this takes will make your home feel calmer as you settle back into daily life and make your next trip easier as well.
